India has reached a significant energy milestone by achieving 50% of its total installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, accomplishing this target five years earlier than originally planned under its Paris Agreement commitments, an official release said on Monday. It added that this breakthrough demonstrates the nation's accelerated transition toward sustainable energy and reinforces its position as a global leader in climate action.
The official release shared by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy remarked that the achievement represents a fundamental shift in India's energy landscape, with non-fossil fuel sources now comprising 242.78 GW of India's total 484.82 GW installed capacity — which includes renewable energy installations of 184.62 GW, large hydroelectric projects contributing 49.38 GW, and nuclear power adding 8.78 GW to the clean energy mix.
Commenting on this achievement, Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi emphasized the significance of it and highlighted that India is demonstrating viable pathways for climate solutions while maintaining economic growth.
The minister said, “In a world seeking climate solutions, India is showing the way. Achieving 50% non-fossil fuel capacity five years ahead of the 2030 target is a proud moment for every Indian. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s leadership continues to drive Bharat’s green transformation — paving the path towards a self-reliant and sustainable future.”
