India's wholesale price index-based inflation rose for the third straight month to 2.61 percent in May on a year-on-year basis as against 1.26 percent a month ago, data from the commerce ministry showed on June 14.
"Positive rate of inflation in May 2024 is primarily due to an increase in prices of food articles, manufacture of food products, crude petroleum and natural gas, mineral oils, other manufacturing, etc," the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said in a statement.
The month-over-month change in the WPI index for May stood at 0.20 percent as compared to April.
The rate of inflation based on the WPI Food Index increased from 5.52 percent in April 2024 to 7.40 percent in May 2024, as per the data.

Inflation in vegetables was 32.42 percent in May, up from 23.60 percent in the previous month. Onion inflation was at 58.05 percent, while potato was 64.05 percent costlier. Pulses cost 21.95 percent more in May.
In the fuel and power basket, inflation stood at 1.35 percent, marginally lower than 1.38 percent in April. In manufactured products, inflation was at 0.78 percent.
Retail inflation eased to one-year low of 4.75 percent in May, data released earlier this week showed.
The RBI earlier this month kept the interest rate unchanged for the eighth time in a row.
