Vedanta Group chairman Anil Agarwal on Wednesday announced the death of his son, Agnivesh, following complications after a skiing accident in the United States. Agnivesh, 49, passed away due to a sudden cardiac arrest while recovering at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.
Anil Agarwal has two children: his late son, Agnivesh, and a daughter, Priya, who is on the board of Vedanta and chairperson of Hindustan Zinc Limited.
In an emotional post on X, Agarwal wrote, “Today is the darkest day of my life.” He said his son had been recovering well after the accident and that the family believed “the worst was behind us,” before fate intervened.
Describing the loss, Anil Agarwal said, “No words can describe the pain of a parent who must bid goodbye to his child. A son is not meant to leave before his father.” He recalled Agnivesh’s birth in Patna on June 3, 1976, and spoke of his journey from a middle-class Bihari family to becoming a respected business leader.
Anil Agarwal said Agnivesh studied at Mayo College, Ajmer, went on to establish Fujairah Gold, and later served as Chairman of Hindustan Zinc. “Beyond all titles and achievements, he remained simple, warm, and deeply human,” he wrote, adding, “To me, he was not just my son. He was my friend. My pride. My world.”

Sharing his son’s beliefs, Agarwal said Agnivesh was passionate about a self-reliant India and would often say, “Papa, we lack nothing as a nation. Why should we ever be behind?” He added that he is renewing a personal commitment to give back more to society in his son’s memory.
“We shared a dream to ensure that no child sleeps hungry, no child is denied education, every woman stands on her own feet, and every young Indian has meaningful work,” Agarwal wrote. “I do not know how to walk this path without you, but I will try carrying your light forward.”
Closing his message, Agarwal wrote, “Beta, you will live on in our hearts, in our work, and in every life you touched.”
Funeral details were not immediately announced.
