Vodafone Idea has taken a page from Bharti Airtel's book by launching a spam management solution designed to protect users from unwanted messages. The solution employs artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to identify and flag potential spam messages.
Since its initial testing phase, the solution has flagged more than 24 million spam messages, the company said in a release on December 2 , announcing the launch of the Spam SMS.
“Our AI-powered spam detection technology reinforces our commitment to customer safety by delivering proactive, real-time protection,” Vodafone Idea chief technology officer Jagbir Singh said .
With spam messages on the rise and often used as a gateway to fraud, Vi’s Spam SMS solution will safeguard customers by identifying and managing unsolicited and potentially harmful text in real-time.
The company is developing solutions to reduce spam, including unwanted voice calls, to better protect its users from unsolicited communications.
These initiatives complement a range of existing measures, such as providing a user-friendly mobile app that simplifies the process for filing spam complaints, it said.
The app allows the automatic capture of spam content (SMS), sender numbers, and dates, as well as the option to whitelist URLs in brand messages.
As more customers embrace digital communication, the company recognises the growing threat posed by SMS-based spams. Vi is focused on staying ahead of these threats and empowering customers with information to make their mobile experience safer, Singh said.
Vi said it also uses consumer feedback and complaints in conjunction with UCC (Unsolicited Commercial Communication) detection, which identifies bulk call patterns (such as calls made from a single number to many distinct numbers) and limits their use to stop further abuse.
It also runs customer awareness campaigns to help users spot phishing attempts, report spam, and encourage caution overall, the company said.
The Vodafone Idea stock ended the day at Rs 8.28 on the National Stock Exchange, down a percent from the previous close.
