In Telangana, the Congress party has woven its narrative around the role played by Sonia Gandhi in the historic realization of separate statehood. This narrative forms the cornerstone of the party's political discourse, placing significant emphasis on the gratitude owed to it for fulfilling Telangana's long-standing aspirations. The party has strategically positioned itself as the torchbearer of the state's dreams by reminding voters of its crucial role in the creation of the state.
Sonia Gandhi led the charge
Led by party stalwart Sonia Gandhi, Congress leaders have spearheaded a campaign that emphasized the fulfillment of commitments and shaping the identity of the region.
Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, even before the election dates were announced, addressed a rally in September, highlighting the party's dedication to Telangana. In a passionate speech on September 17, she expressed her dream of a Congress-led government committed to all sections of society. Gandhi, recalling the party's involvement in the creation of Telangana, urged the audience to support the Congress, emphasizing their duty to elevate the state to new heights. "We had the opportunity to be a part of the birth of this great state, Telangana. Now, it is our duty to elevate the state to new heights. Are you going to support us?" she said.
Promises and commitments
At the same rally, Rahul Gandhi echoed his mother's commitment, assuring voters that Congress would fulfill its promises with the same commitment shown in granting statehood. He said, "Sonia Ji helped you in creating Telangana state, and I can also say that had Sonia Gandhi not helped, then a separate Telangana would not have been formed."
"Congress promised separate statehood to Telangana and delivered it; so have no doubts about Congress implementing all six guarantees with a similar commitment," he added.
AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi, in an October 19 rally, reiterated the Congress's commitment to Telangana, acknowledging the sacrifices made by its people. She highlighted the heavy political price the party paid for the statehood.
Mallikarjun Kharge, AICC chief, accused the current BRS leadership in Telangana of betraying Sonia Gandhi. Speaking in Sangareddy on October 29, Kharge criticized the BRS government, alleging that despite seeking Sonia Gandhi's blessings and pledging to merge their party with the Congress, they had changed their stance. Kharge remarked, "These people (BRS), who once visited Sonia Gandhi’s home, sought her blessings, and promised to merge their party with the Congress, have changed their stance,” he said. He went on to say, "Not only Sonia Gandhi, but even Indira Gandhi had strong ties with Telangana people. They voted her to victory from Medak, and she played a pivotal role in establishing BHEL, BDL and Ordnance factories, among others."
Rahul Gandhi reaffirmed on October 31 in Kollapur that the Congress party is committed to fulfilling the aspirations that led to the formation of Telangana. Emphasizing the common vision shared by the people and the Congress for the establishment of Telangana, he promised that, in the event of winning the election, the party would actively strive to turn those shared dreams into reality.
Congress banks on historical legacy for electoral triumph
In the last two assembly elections, voters' choices were driven by a quest for development, improved governance, and progress. Congress is currently banking on its historical legacy in Telangana, hoping that the promise of fulfilled aspirations will translate into electoral success in the upcoming polls. Congress party sees 2023 elections as an opportunity for them. The party believes that their grant of a separate state will get settled when people vote them once. The question is whether this theme will lead to its electoral success is yet to be answered as Telangana braces for a close contest.
