The monsoon brings cooler temperatures, and cosy indoors. However, it also invites sneaky interior issues that often go unnoticed until it’s too late. Moisture, mould, and leaks can quietly erode your living space if not addressed in time.
Many people delay repairs until the rains are over, but monsoon-related issues need immediate attention, says Rachna Agarwal, Founder and Design Ideator, Studio IAAD, Gurugram. “Damp patches or minor leaks might seem harmless but can lead to structural damage or even electrical hazards if left unresolved.” According to Agarwal, monsoon-proofing your home doesn’t require heavy renovations, it’s about timely, practical choices that keep your space safe and sound during unpredictable weather.
Here are 6 smart monsoon updates that help protect your interiors:
Start with a professional inspection: Before applying any waterproofing solutions, have a professional inspect for hidden cracks or seepage. “This prevents you from doing temporary fixes that won’t last,” says Agarwal. A one-time, thorough job is more cost-effective than recurring patch-ups.
Seal the cracks right: Cracks in walls, ceilings, and terraces need quick-setting plugs or PU injection grouts. “For mosaic or IPS surfaces, use acrylic fillers or membrane coatings. These act as waterproof shields during heavy rainfall,” she says.
Keep your roof rain-ready: Your roof handles the worst of the downpour, so make sure it drains well. “Sloped roofs are ideal, but all outlets and gutters should be cleared regularly. Clogged drains cause pooling, which leads to leaks,” Agarwal shares.
Focus on balconies and terraces: “These are high-risk zones,” says Agarwal. “Keep them clean, relocate heavy planters, and cover exposed furniture. Most importantly, make sure the drains aren’t blocked by leaves or debris,”
Close those sneaky window gaps: Window frames are common entry points for moisture. “Use silicone sealants or weatherstrips to keep the water out. This stops paint damage, mould, and peeling interiors,” she says.
Lift floor-level furniture: Sofas or cabinets near exterior walls soak up moisture quickly. “Use risers or shift them slightly away from walls. “It’s a small move that can save your furniture from warping or rotting,” Rachna adds,”
