They’ve been around for centuries, and they’re still the heart of Diwali decor. Yes, we’re talking about good old diyas, the earthen lamps. But lighting them is just the beginning. These earthy little beauties can do so much more than sit in rows. Whether you want to go traditional, artsy, or downright inventive, here are seven ways to bring diyas into your décor that go far beyond wax and wicks, and most don’t even need a flame.
Diyas hold tradition, warmth, and that unmistakable festive vibe. But in a world of LED lights and scented candles, they sometimes get overlooked. Whether you're trying to reduce plastic decor or just want to give your space a grounded, earthy look, earthen diyas are your best friend. All it takes is a little paint, a glue gun, and some imagination. These creative hacks will make you fall in love with diyas all over again.
Check out these 7 smart ways to decorate with earthen diyas:
Diya rangoli: Combine colour with glow—arrange unlit or lit diyas into a circular or floral pattern. Add flower petals or coloured powder in between for depth. This looks attractive in the day and stunning at night.

Turn them upside down: Earthen lamps make good mini pedestals. Flip a few diyas, glue them base-side up, and place a small decorative item on top; a brass bell, a Ganesha idol, or even a tealight.
Paint and personalise: Use acrylic paint or metallic spray to give your diyas a gold, copper, or jewel-tone makeover. Add glitter, mirrors, or even tiny bindis for detail. Great as table décor or gifts.
Floating diya bowls: Fill a shallow urli or brass plate with water, add flower petals, and float a few diyas. Place it at your entrance or near your puja setup, it smells great and glows beautifully.
Stack them into a lamp: Glue a few diyas together (bottom to top) in a spiral or tiered design to create a makeshift lamp tower. Stick fairy lights in between the layers for a magical effect.
Diya garlands: String mini diyas together using jute rope or thick thread, leaving space between each. Hang along stair rails, windows, or balconies. Use fake tealights for safety and zero wax mess.
Use them as spice bowls or holders: Post-Diwali, clean and use them as spice pinch bowls in the kitchen or to hold kumkum, haldi, cloves, cardamom or even jewellery on your vanity. They’re reusable and rustic chic.
