India Couture Week 2025: Sara Ali Khan and Tara Sutaria's bold take on classic lehenga looks

The biggest takeaway from this year’s India Couture Week? Bridal lehengas are no longer bound by tradition alone. Whether it’s choosing metallics over maroons, corsets over cholis, or embroidery that tells a story, brides are writing their own rules.

From romantic pastels to metallic minimalism, the bridal lehenga has found new expressions at the India Couture Week 2025. Led by some of Bollywood’s most stylish actresses on the runway, we couldn’t help but notice the spectacular couture and some key bridal trends that indicate a season high on experimentation.

Light and effortless:

This season, the bride isn’t just dressing for tradition; she’s dressing for herself. Bollywood actress Sara Ali Khan opened the conversation on lightness with her showstopper outfit. She wore an ethereal rose gold lehenga, designed by Aisha Rao and the Banarasi tissue brocade ensemble stood out for its unconventional colour and whimsical detailing on the runway. Intricate geometric checks and floral appliqué came alive with hand-embroidered beads and crystals, proving that traditional craft can indeed feel fresh and contemporary.

Designer Aisha Rao, known for her vibrant appliqué work, revealed that her collection Wild at Heart was inspired by young couples looking to strike a balance between heritage and individuality. “Through the personal appointments I’ve taken recently, I’ve seen how young brides and grooms want to balance tradition with modernity,” she said.

“This time, in our India Couture Week collection Wild at Heart, we’ve worked with classic Banarasi saris but reimagined them with modern embroidery and colours that feel bold and fresh. That’s also why we introduced a new palette in Wild at Heart. Shades like teakberry and lush green have been big favourites for brides moving beyond classic reds, while molten metallics like rose gold and antique champagne bring a celebratory yet contemporary edge. People are drawn to our signature appliqué, but this season we’ve given it a new spin with metallic threadwork, hand-braided textures, and crystals introduced for that extra touch of drama and light.”

Subtle and sophisticated:

At the fashion label ROSEROOM by designer Isha Jajodia, the focus was on bridal wear as a deeply personal expression of identity. The designer’s new collection depicted an emotional journey of womanhood. Actress Tara Sutaria closed the show in an ivory organza skirt paired with a sculptural 18K gold-plated corset, hand-moulded and detailed over four painstaking months. The look was delicate yet commanding, a beautiful contradiction that’s become increasingly popular with modern brides.

Designer Isha Jajodia mentioned the change in shift and says, “I think to begin with, brides today are becoming more explorative, experimental, and expressive. They are dressing for themselves, with a strong sense of identity and personal storytelling. We’re seeing a clear shift towards pastel tones, moving away from traditional reds and deeper palettes. There’s a softness in bridal dressing now, not just in colour but also in silhouettes and styling. Brides are embracing lighter fabrics, subtle detailing, and pieces that feel intimate and meaningful, rather than ornate for the sake of tradition. Couture is becoming more personal and less prescriptive.”
