Holi 2024: Prep your skin with a thick layer of body butter or moisturiser. Opt for products that contain plant-based ingredients like shea butter, argan oil or olive oil

Today is Holi. While it's a time to immerse ourselves in the festive spirit and have fun, it's also crucial to ensure that our skin remains protected. Despite the availability of eco-friendly and skin-friendly colours in the market today, the chemicals present in these colours can still cause skin damage.

Holi colours can clog pores, leading to breakouts or allergic reactions, which is why taking precautionary measures is essential. From applying a protective layer of moisturiser to using natural ingredients to remove colours gently, there are several hacks to help keep your skin safe and healthy during this vibrant celebration.

If you’re wondering how to keep your skin protected while not missing out on the fun, we’ve got you covered. Here are five essential hacks by Rajat Mathur, DGM of Learning Academy, The Body Shop India, to keep your skin safe during the celebrations.

Nourish and protect

Before stepping outside to play Holi, it’s essential to keep your skin hydrated and nourished. Prep your skin with a thick layer of body butter or moisturiser. Opt for products that contain plant-based ingredients like shea butter, argan oil or olive oil. These ingredients not only hydrate the skin but also create a barrier that helps prevent the colours from penetrating deep into the skin, making them easier to wash off later.

Break down the colours

The after-care during Holi is crucial for your skin. For stubborn colours that won't budge, consider using cleansing balms or oils. These products effectively break down the pigment and help remove them without clogging pores. Massage the balm or oil onto the skin gently, focusing on areas where the colours are more concentrated. Rinse off with lukewarm water and pat dry.

Gentle cleansers: The foundation of skincare

Once the festivities are over, it's essential to cleanse your skin gently and immediately after playing. Use a mild, gentle cleanser that is suitable for your skin type. Cleansing helps remove the colours and any residue without stripping the skin of its natural oils. Follow the basic skincare routine of cleanse, tone, moisturise to restore your skin's pH balance and ensure it doesn’t become dry and dull.

Aloe vera, almond milk, Vitamin E: Your skin’s besties

After cleansing your skin, pamper it with products that contain ingredients of natural origin that are soothing, like aloe vera, almond milk and almond milk. These ingredients help calm the skin, reduce redness, and restore its natural moisture balance. Look for products that are specifically formulated for the face, lips, and other sensitive areas to ensure complete protection.

Sunscreen is a non-negotiable

Holi is meant to be celebrated out in the open, and while you shouldn’t skip the fun, protecting yourself from the sun is a must. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30-50, focusing on areas that are exposed to the sun. Additionally, use a lip balm with SPF to protect your lips from getting dry and chapped. Reapply the sunblock every few hours, especially if you're spending extended periods outdoors.

The post-Holi care

Once you've thoroughly cleansed your skin post-Holi, consider using tea tree oil to help reduce acne and soothe any inflammation caused by the colours. Tea tree oil has antibacterial properties that can help prevent breakouts and keep your skin clear. Additionally, using a charcoal or matcha face mask can help draw out impurities and detoxify your skin, leaving it refreshed and rejuvenated.
