With the onset of the festive season, it is time to prep your house for inviting friends and family for celebrations and get-togethers. While it’s always a good idea to keep your space spotless and shiny, it is equally important to spruce it up for a more festive feel.
If you’re wondering how to switch up your place, here are some simple décor ideas to get you going. From adding colours with decorative pillows to setting up warm, cosy corners, these are some sure-shot ways to make your house sparkle this festive season…
- Add colours with decorative pillows, upholstery, or rugs
Make your house look vibrant this festive season by incorporating colours in your living room the easiest way. Architect Anjaleka Kripalani, founder of Angie Homes, told Moneycontrol, “Festive decor is fun and playful when you layer colours and textures. Add colour through the use of sumptuous jewel tones, such as emerald green, ruby, and sapphire, with decorative pillows, upholstery, or rugs.”

- Pick metal decor pieces such as candle stands, copper vases for luxe appeal
You can never go wrong with metal pieces, as they enhance the beauty of the space and make it look luxurious. Anjaleka Kripalani added, “Layer in some metals—gold candle stands, brass trays, or copper vases, for instance—to insert warmth and a festive feeling into the decor. Various textures add depth and richness, so consider mixing silk, velvet, or brocade with whatever colours you use.”
- Use display art and objects like paintings, lamps, pottery
Go truly festive by introducing storytelling elements through art pieces and objects. These are bound to make your house stand out. “Each prominent art piece (painting, sculpture, unique décor, etc.) should evoke tradition with a contemporary twist. For example, while individual small art displays could become cluttered, displaying a gallery wall with multiple smaller pieces or many family heirlooms can bring a celebratory yet personal feel into the room. Finally, crafted lamps, pottery, or handcrafted folk figures add personality and heart to a festive display,” Kripalani shared.

- Set up cosy corners by layering side tables with decorative boxes, candles, and flowers
Add character to your living space by sprucing up the corners where people are most likely to gather. Kritarth Bhasin, Director of Madihah Home, shared with Moneycontrol, “Layer side tables with an assortment of decorative boxes, candles, artisanal trays, etc. And, even if it’s only a small area, it will feel special. Even little touches such as hand-painted diyas or fresh marigolds can instantly add a touch of brightness!”
- Marry cultural heritage inspiration with modern-day design
Seamlessly fuse contemporary décor with elements of cultural heritage for a festive yet timeless charm. “Think decorative trays, handcrafted boxes and artistic centrepieces that can beautifully accompany flowers and lights. The sentiment we are trying to achieve is an intentionally designed ambience that feels rooted in tradition but emanates style for contemporary homes,” Bhasin added.
