5 superfoods you must have in 2026

Olive Oil

One of the easiest superfoods to add to your daily diet is olive oil. It is rich in antioxidants, monounsaturated fats, and has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Dr Salhab said, “I typically drizzle about 2 to 4 tablespoons on food a day. It’s associated with a lower risk of fatty liver, protection against gallbladder stones, and a lower risk of colon cancer.”

Avocado

Dr Salhab recommended having at least half an avocado. “It has a surprising amount of fibre, is a prebiotic, and can lower the risk of colon cancer in men,” he added. An avocado toast makes for a healthy snack and it is also great in taste. Another popular way to enjoy them is by blending them into smoothies.

Fruits with skin on

According to the gastroenterologist, consuming fruits with the skin on especially apples is highly beneficial. “They have a really strong protective effect against fatty liver and colon cancer. Add cinnamon and honey and it makes a great snack, particularly for the kids,” he said. Fruits can be enjoyed on their own or as salads.

Mixed nuts

Nuts are nutritious, delicious, and can be enjoyed in a number of ways. It doesn’t take much to add a handful of nuts to your diet. “They contain vitamin E, which can be protective against a fatty liver. Walnuts particularly lower the risk of colon cancer,” Dr Salhab pointed out. They can be added to yogurt for maximum benefits.

Healthy beverages

Dr Salhab said, “A recent study showed that coffee, green tea, and cacao of at least 70% can be protective against a fatty liver. So I make a habit to eat these weekly.” All these drinks are healthy and safe to be enjoyed. So incorporating them into your diet is only wise.
