It's not something most men talk about, not over dinner, not in the office, and certainly not with friends. But more Indian men are silently battling urinary tract infections. And unlike the occasional cold or backache, these aren’t always so harmless.

In fact, UTIs in men can be stubborn, painful, and at times, a signal that something more serious is brewing inside. But before worry sets in, the good news is: it’s preventable. And often, it starts with just a glass of water.

Most men shrug off discomfort when they pee. A bit of burning, a little urgency, and it’s written off as stress or spicy food. Don't take it lightly. Says Dr Vishal Naik, Consultant Urologist at Even Healthcare, Bengaluru, “Many men either self-medicate or ignore the signs altogether. That’s what turns a manageable infection into something much worse.”

In men, UTIs can sometimes lead to kidney problems, prostate infections, or even life-threatening sepsis. And in many cases, the early signs — frequent urination, cloudy urine, mild fever — go unnoticed or are brushed under the rug until it’s too late.

According to Dr Naik, the increase in UTIs among men isn’t surprising. “There are many reasons. Busy workdays, dehydration, stress, and underlying issues like diabetes or an enlarged prostate are all causes,” he says.

Add to all this India’s intense summers, waterlogged monsoon streets, and less-than-ideal public toilets. All this is the perfect recipe for infections to thrive. “It’s not just about bacteria. It’s about lifestyle,” says the expert.

And that’s where prevention really begins — not in the medicine cabinet, but in everyday choices.

Dr Naik shares 6 everyday habits that could save you from a painful UTI:

  • Drink more water: Sounds simple, but it’s often the first thing men ignore. “Hydration helps flush out bacteria. If your urine is dark or smells strong, it’s time to top up your water intake,” says Dr Naik.

  • Don’t ignore nature’s call: Holding in your urine for long hours (especially during meetings or travel) increases the risk of infection. Listen to your body, it’s trying to help you.

  • Prioritise hygiene, especially in monsoon: Wet jeans, damp underwear, and using public toilets without cleaning up can be dangerous. “All of this makes it easier for bacteria to spread. Change clothes promptly and wash properly after urination,” he informs.

  • Manage your stress, get sleep: Your body recovers when it rests. Chronic stress and sleepless nights weaken immunity, making it harder to fight infections. A short walk, mindful meditation, or simply cutting down screen time can help more than you think.

  • Monitor health conditions like diabetes or prostate issues: If you're over 50 or living with diabetes, check in with your doctor regularly. “These conditions can silently increase your risk of UTIs, and early treatment can prevent bigger problems,” Dr Naik opines.

  • Stop misusing antibiotics: Not every burning sensation needs a tablet from your drawer. “Misusing antibiotics can make infections worse in the long run. If symptoms persist for more than a day or two, see a doctor and get the right treatment,” insists Dr Naik.
