Poor dental health can lead to more than just discomfort—it can affect your health. According to multiple studies, untreated dental issues such as cavities or gum disease can contribute to systemic health problems like cardiovascular disease and diabetes. When traveling, being away from your regular oral care routine and possibly indulging in different foods and beverages can increase the risk of dental problems. Therefore, prioritising dental health is important, even when travelling

As you get ready for your adventures, don't let your dental health take a backseat, says Dr Kamlesh Kothari, Founder and Clinical Director of Aesthetica in Kolkata and an expert in dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, and maxillofacial surgery. “A confident  smile should be at the forefront of your travel plan. Whether you're enjoying exotic cuisines or soaking up sunsets in far-off lands, make sure your pearly whites stay fabulous,”

To ensure your vacation stays worry-free and picture-perfect, Dr Kothari shares a few effective tips:

Daily oral care: When packing for a trip, don’t forget your travel-sized toothbrush, tongue cleaner, toothpaste, floss, and mouthwash in your carry-on. These essentials ensure your oral hygiene stays intact, no matter how far from home you roam. It's crucial to keep your dentist's phone number handy for any emergency advice.

Brush everyday: Stick to your dental regimen, even at 30,000 feet. Brushing for a solid two minutes, twice a day, is essential to prevent cavities. Consider using an electric travel toothbrush for a thorough clean.

Opt for H2O quality: Choose bottled or filtered water over tap water to avoid potential contaminants that can harm your teeth and overall health. This precaution helps steer clear of any unwelcome surprises.

Snack smart: Instead of sugary snacks, opt for healthier alternatives like nuts, cheese, or crunchy veggies. Sugar-free gum is also beneficial; it satisfies your sweet tooth and boosts saliva production to keep teeth clean and neutralise acid.

Pre-trip dental care: Before your trip, visit your dentist for a thorough check-up to address potential issues and avoid dental emergencies abroad. Carry painkillers as advised by your dentist for immediate relief.

Disinfect your dental tools: Use a portable toothbrush sanitiser to combat bacteria in hotel bathrooms and ensure your toothbrush remains clean and safe.

Rinse and refresh: After every meal, swish water around your mouth to dislodge food particles and maintain oral hygiene and fresh breath throughout your travels.

Choose safe water: Follow local advice on tap water safety; choose bottled or filtered options to protect your health and teeth from harmful substances.

Gum it up: Chew sugar-free gum to boost saliva production, which neutralises acid and strengthens teeth. It's a handy solution when brushing isn't immediately possible after eating.

Post-trip dental care: Schedule a dental check-up upon returning home to address any issues that may have developed during your travels and maintain a healthy smile.
