Whether it’s walking, running, yoga, or strength training, correct form is important to derive maximum benefits from any type of physical activity. Many people take up running to stay fit and happy; however, they may not be doing it correctly.

While there’s a lot of information about postures for different types of workouts, there’s little guidance on the proper running form. For this, fitness coach Anya Culling shared a video explaining how to improve performance with a few small modifications to help you become a better runner.

The caption of her post read, “Did you know perfecting your running form can help you become a stronger, more efficient runner? Over time, you’ll start running with less effort.”

5 ways to correct your running form

  • Arm Swing: Her first advice was not to cross your arms too much. “Try to keep your arms at a 90-degree angle, moving forwards and backwards, not across your body,” she said.

Experts say that your arms help you run straight by counteracting the rotation of your hips and pelvis.
  • Posture: A good running postureis similar to the correct form for standing or walking. Sharing more, Anya said, “You want to keep your head up, your shoulders relaxed, and your chest open. Imagine a balloon is holding you upright.”

  • Stride: Anya cautioned against overstriding while running. “You want to land your foot under the weight of your body, not way out in front,” she added.

Experts say that overstriding increases the risk of injury by putting more pressure on one knee.
  • Breathing: Just like any other form of exercise, breathing plays an important role in running. “Remember to control your breathing: in through your nose, out through your mouth, and stay relaxed.”

  • Cadence: Cadence is the number of steps you take per minute, or your step speed. It can be easily tracked through smartwatches and fitness trackers while you run. Anya said, “You want short, fast steps. A quick turnover is the most efficient way to run.”
