For many people, the holiday season means getting together with loved ones and chit-chatting over food and drinks. And while it may be a season to enjoy, alcohol consumption still comes with its side effects, with new research suggesting that even moderate amounts can be harmful.

However, if you’re planning to indulge and drink alcohol or alcoholic beverages, neuroscientist Robert W. B. Love suggested three supplements to protect your brain from some of the harmful side effects of alcohol.

3 best supplements

Selenium

The first on his list was selenium, a mineral he said helps detoxify the brainand the body. How does it work? “It helps make something called glutathione, which is your body’s master antioxidant for detoxification.” He advised taking it before and after drinking alcohol to minimise the effects and cleanse the body.

Activated charcoal

The neuroscientist clarified that activated charcoal may not help absorb alcohol, but it certainly helps absorb sugar. He said, “There’s actually a lot of sugar in alcoholic drinks that is bad for you. It can increase hangovers. So if you take activated charcoal with your alcohol, this will help you absorb the sugar present in alcohol and protect you from a brain hangover.”

Lion’s mane and L-tyrosine

The two supplements together help reduce the desire for alcohol. The neuroscientist explained, “L-tyrosine is an amino acid that increases dopamine, and lion’s mane reduces stress and anxiety and improves mood, so that just feels really good together.” This one can be taken before going out, as it will reduce your desire to drink.

While it’s best to consult a physician before taking them, Robert W. B. Love also recommended going alcohol-free for at least a month. He encouraged his followers to see how they feel and added that he has been off alcohol for the last seven years, and it’s one of the best things he has done for his brain.
