Migraines are severe headaches that come with complex neurological conditions and can significantly disrupt your everyday life. From throbbing pain and nausea to sensitivity to light and sound, migraines can be challenging.
Migraines are often accompanied by symptoms such like nausea, vomiting, and severe sensitivity to light, sound, or smells, warns Dr Aditya Gupta, Director of Neurosurgery & CyberKnife at Artemis Hospital, Gurgaon. “These attacks can last anywhere from a few hours to several days, severely affecting daily activities and quality of life,” he adds.

Dr Gupta suggests these 8 effective tips to manage and find lasting relief from migraines:
Know your triggers: The most common triggers of migraines include stress, certain foods (like aged cheese, chocolate, and processed meats), caffeine, alcohol, and changes in sleep patterns. Try to keep a migraine diary that can help identify patterns and avoid triggers.
Do not ignore your sleep: Irregular sleep patterns can add to migraine triggers. Always make sure you have a good night sleep, at least 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Also, maintain a sleep routine and try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends.
Hydration is important: Drinking sufficient water and staying hydrated is good for your health. It can also help combat headaches as dehydration is a common migraine trigger. Make sure to drink plenty of water. Aim for at least 8 glasses of water daily, and more if you’re active or it’s hot outside.
Keep stress at bay: Stress is one of the most common triggers for headaches, including migraines. Introduce practices like deep breathing exercises, meditation, yoga, and regular physical activity that can help reduce stress levels. Finding a relaxing hobby or taking breaks during the day can also be beneficial.
Your diet plays a vital role: Skipping meals or fasting can trigger migraines. Eat balanced meals at regular intervals to maintain stable blood sugar levels. Include a variety of foods rich in nutrients, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats.

Watch your drink: While caffeine can sometimes help reduce headache symptoms, too much of it can trigger migraines. Moderation is key. Similarly, limit alcohol intake, as it can dehydrate the body and trigger migraines.
Light, sound, migraines: Exposure to bright lights and loud noises can make your migraines worse. When you feel a trigger, relax in a calm, dark, and quiet space. Using blackout curtains and noise-canceling headphones can be particularly helpful.
Preventive measures:
For those who experience frequent migraines, preventive medications may be an option. Consult with a doctor to discuss whether these medications are appropriate for you. In addition, alternative treatments such as acupuncture, biofeedback, and cognitive behavioural therapy have shown promise in managing migraines.
