Sattu, in Ayurveda, is known for being nutrient-dense, offering a powerful combination of protein, fibre, calcium, iron, and magnesium, all in just one scoop. Made traditionally by dry roasting grains like barley or Bengal gram and grinding them into a fine powder, it is both easily digestible and energising. Its dry and light nature makes it suitable for hot climates, where it acts as a cooling agent and prevents dehydration.

In summers, Mantha — a drink made from Sattu mixed with water, sugar, and ghee — provides instant energy and satiety. It is light on the stomach and perfect for those recovering from physical exertion or heat-induced fatigue.

According to a study published in the International Research Journal of Ayurveda & Yoga, Sattu has been extensively discussed in Ayurvedic scriptures like Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridaya. These texts identify different types of Sattu prepared from grains, medicinal plants, and even fruits, each with distinct therapeutic uses.

  • It's light and easy to digest: Its Laghu (light) and Ruksha (dry) properties make it easy on the stomach. It doesn’t cause bloating and is gentle for those with weak digestion in summer.

  • It's rich in nutrients: Made from roasted pulses or grains, Sattu contains essential minerals like iron, calcium, and magnesium, which help combat fatigue, muscle cramps, and weakness brought on by heat.

  • It reduces hunger pangs: A glass of Sattu keeps you full for longer, reducing unnecessary snacking in hot weather when the appetite is low but energy needs remain.

  • It helps maintain electrolyte balance: When mixed with salt, sugar, and lemon, Sattu acts like a natural ORS (oral rehydration solution), replenishing lost salts and maintaining electrolyte balance in the body.

Precautions:

Sattu should not be consumed at night, after meals, or in excess, and it should always be mixed with ghee and water to balance its dry nature and ensure smoother digestion.
