Has it ever happened to you that you woke up in the middle of the night after having a bizarre dream, and your mom blamed it on the cheesy pizza you had before bedtime? Well, she was probably right. A new study suggests there’s real science behind it. Researchers found that some foods, especially dairy, may be linked to nightmares and poor sleep, particularly in people with food intolerances like lactose sensitivity.
Scientists from Université de Montréal and MacEwan University asked over 1,000 students about their eating habits, sleep patterns, and dream experiences. They found that diet and digestion might have more influence on your dreams than you think, and some foods are more likely than others to stir up a restless night.
While traditional wisdom has long warned us that cheese and dairy before bed can lead to weird dreams, this study gives a proper data to back it up.

7 surprising ways your food is messing with your dreams
People with lactose intolerance were much more likely to have nightmares. Why? Because the digestive distress caused by dairy, bloating, cramps, gas, can disrupt your sleep and make your dreams more vivid or disturbing.
Nightmare severity was strongly linked to people with food allergies or intolerances. Any food that upsets your system might also disturb your dreams, especially if it causes physical discomfort during the night.
The study found women were almost twice as likely to report food intolerances and sleep issues. They also remembered their dreams more vividly and were more likely to link specific foods to nightmares.

Participants who ate more healthily foods were not only better sleepers, they also recalled more dreams and had fewer negative ones. A poor diet, on the other hand, was linked to restless nights and unpleasant dreams.
Around 40 percent of people believed eating late or specific foods affected their sleep. Sweets, spicy food, and dairy were the top culprits for triggering odd or unsettling dreams, especially when eaten close to bedtime.

The study showed that a healthier evening eating led to better sleep. If you know you have food sensitivities, especially to dairy, consider cutting back in the evening and see if your sleep improves.
