What is refractive error?
Myopia, also referred to as short-sightedness, is an error of refraction where distant objects seem to be blurred, as the light focuses in front of the retina, instead of on the retina. The eyeball is often elongated, and the corneal curvature may be exaggerated in some cases.

Early difficulty in distant vision
One of the most common complaints of people who develop myopia is a difficulty in seeing distant objects clearly. It may first be noticed while sitting in classrooms or when one tries to read road signs. The affected individual may squint to improve the clarity of vision.

Eye strain and related symptoms In people with short-sightedness, eye strain is commonly experienced, and headaches may develop consequently. Such symptoms worsen when the person performs tasks that involve distant vision. Near objects often remain clear, which may delay diagnosis.

Symptoms of simple myopia
Simple myopia is the most common form, and it results from a mismatch between the axial length of the eye and the refractive power. It may stabilise by adulthood in school-going children. The visual acuity improves when one begins to wear corrective glasses.

Symptoms of pathological myopia
Pathological myopia shows a progressive elongation of the eye with retinal changes that are irreversible. It can cause visual impairment and lead to complications if left untreated. Regular evaluation of the retina is necessary, and timely follow-up is advised.

Corrective glasses as treatment
The simplest and safest way of treating myopia is wearing corrective glasses. Minus lenses diverge the light rays so that the image is formed on the retina. They are easy to maintain and the visual improvement is immediate. It is the preferred treatment by most children and adults.

Advantages of wearing glasses Glasses are non-invasive and inexpensive, and overall considered safe. The risk of eye infection is less, and they are easy to replace as well. Frequent power changes can be done conveniently, and they also protect the eyes from dust and ultraviolet rays.

Benefits of contact lenses On the other hand, contact lenses provide a wider visual field and better cosmetics. As they are kept directly on the cornea, the peripheral vision becomes clearer and are useful for those with high myopic corrections. Soft lenses and daily disposables may be used by some.

Limitations of contact lenses
Contact lenses require strict hygiene so as to avoid infection of the cornea. The risk of conjunctivitis and corneal ulcers is increased. Overuse of contact lenses can lead to dryness and irritation, and they are costlier as compared to glasses. They are not suitable for those with poor compliance.

Laser-assisted myopia correction
LASIK, also known as Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, has been found to reshape the cornea and correct the existing refractive error. A flap is created before the cornea is reshaped. However, this is considered only for those cases where the myopia has stabilised. (Disclaimer: This article, including health and fitness advice, only provides generic information.
