Lung health is vital for good health, as the lungs are essential for breathing and delivering oxygen to the bloodstream. Proper lung function helps ensure that every cell in the body receives the oxygen it needs to function well. Poor lung health can lead to breathing difficulties, reduced exercise tolerance, and a higher risk of respiratory infections.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the lungs work by inhaling oxygen-rich air and exhaling carbon dioxide, a waste product of metabolism. This exchange occurs in the alveoli, tiny air sacs in the lungs. Factors such as smoking, air pollution, and exposure to toxins can impair lung function, leading to conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma.

Ayurveda, the traditional system of medicine from India, offers various natural remedies to support lung health. Herbal drinks are an integral part of this practice, promoting natural lung detox and better respiratory well-being.

Here are five Ayurvedic drinks to cleanse your lungs naturally, especially beneficial when consumed on an empty stomach:

Turmeric tea: Turmeric, known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, is excellent for lung health. Turmeric tea can help reduce inflammation in the respiratory tract and improve the lung function. Boil a teaspoon of turmeric powder in a cup of water. Add a pinch of black pepper to enhance absorption. Strain and drink this tea daily.

Ginger and lemon tea: Ginger has natural anti-inflammatory properties that can soothe the respiratory system and aid in clearing mucus from the lungs. Lemon adds vitamin C, which supports immune function. Boil a few slices of fresh ginger in water for 5-10 minutes. Add a squeeze of lemon juice before drinking. Consume this tea once or twice daily.

Tulsi tea: Tulsi, or holy basil, is a popular herb in Ayurveda known for its ability to enhance lung health. It helps combat respiratory infections and supports detoxification. Steep a handful of fresh tulsi leaves or a teaspoon of dried tulsi leaves in hot water for 10 minutes. Strain and drink this tea daily.

Peppermint tea: Peppermint has menthol, which can help relax the muscles of the respiratory tract and ease breathing. It also has antimicrobial properties that can help keep the respiratory system healthy. Infuse a handful of fresh peppermint leaves or a peppermint tea bag in hot water for 5-7 minutes. Drink this tea up to twice a day.

Fenugreek and honey elixir: Fenugreek seeds are known for their ability to reduce mucus and support lung health. Honey adds a soothing effect and has antibacterial properties. Soak a tablespoon of fenugreek seeds in water overnight. In the morning, strain the water and mix it with a teaspoon of honey. Drink this mixture on an empty stomach.

Always consult a healthcare provider before starting any new health regimen, especially if you have underlying health conditions.
