Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, occurs when blood glucose levels drop below normal. Glucose is the body's primary energy source, and low levels can lead to symptoms like dizziness, sweating, confusion, and even loss of consciousness. Causes include medications like insulin or other diabetes drugs, excessive alcohol consumption, prolonged fasting or skipping meals, intense exercise without adequate food intake, and certain medical conditions such as hormonal deficiencies, severe infections, or liver disease.

Symptoms of hypoglycemia include shaking or trembling, sweating, anxiety or nervousness, irritability or confusion, rapid heartbeat, hunger, dizziness or light-headedness, weakness or fatigue, headache, and blurred vision. Managing hypoglycemia involves recognising these symptoms early and addressing the underlying causes, ensuring a balanced diet, and consulting a doctor for appropriate treatment and management strategies.

Here are some natural ways to control hypoglycemia according to Dr Ananya Gupta at harmony health center.

Natural ways to control hypoglycemia

Frequent small meals: Eat small, balanced meals every 3-4 hours to maintain stable blood sugar levels.

Balanced diet: Include a mix of complex carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats in your diet to slow the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream.

Low glycemic index foods: Choose foods with a low glycemic index (GI), such as whole grains, vegetables, and legumes, which release glucose more slowly into the bloodstream.

Avoid sugary foods and drinks: Minimise consumption of refined sugars and sugary beverages which can cause rapid spikes and drops in blood sugar levels.

Protein and Fibre: Include protein-rich foods (like lean meats, eggs, nuts, and legumes) and high-fibre foods (like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains) to help regulate blood sugar.

Regular exercise: Engage in regular physical activity to improve insulin sensitivity and help maintain stable blood sugar levels. However, avoid intense exercise on an empty stomach.

Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help maintain optimal blood sugar levels.

Monitor blood sugar levels: Regularly check your blood sugar levels if you are at risk of hypoglycemia to ensure they remain within a healthy range.

Stress management: Practice stress-reducing activities such as yoga, meditation, or deep breathing exercises, as stress can impact blood sugar levels.

Adequate sleep: Ensure you get sufficient sleep, as poor sleep can affect blood sugar regulation.

Ayurvedic remedies for hypoglycemia

Ashwagandha: Known to help balance blood sugar levels and reduce stress.

Bitter gourd (Karela): Contains compounds that can help regulate blood sugar levels.

Fenugreek seeds (Methi): Rich in soluble fibre, which helps manage blood sugar levels.

Cinnamon: May help improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar levels.

Neem: Traditionally used to control blood sugar levels.

Indian gooseberry (Amla): Can help regulate blood sugar levels and improve overall health.

It's essential to consult with your doctor before making significant changes to your diet or exercise routine, especially if you have diabetes or other health conditions that affect blood sugar levels.
