Your eyes barely get the rest they deserve. Blame it on the hours of screen time, pollution, stress, all of which take their toll on your eyes. Besides, lack of proper sleep adds to the trouble. In such cases, Ayurveda may offer relief, protection, and even rejuvenation.
In Ayurveda, the eyes draw their vitality from Alochaka Pitta, when this gets imbalanced, you start noticing fatigue, dryness, or blurred vision, explains Dr Mandeep Singh Basu, Director Dr Basu Eye Care Centre.
“The connection between vision and inner energy is at the heart of Ayurvedic eye care” says Dr Basu, adding, “We see not just with our eyes, but with the energy that fuels them.” And when that energy, Alochaka Pitta, is disrupted by long exposure to harsh light, mental strain, or air pollution, the eyes become strained and less effective.
"Ayurveda recommends restoring this balance through a holistic mix of detoxification, nourishment, and cooling therapies", Dr Basu tells Moneycontrol.

Dr Basu suggests 7 effective herbs that may help support and strengthen the eyes:
Triphala: One of the most well-known remedy, Triphala combines three powerful fruits: Amalaki, Bibhitaki, and Haritaki. Used for centuries, it gently cleanses and rejuvenates eye tissues. “It’s brilliant as a daily supplement or even used as an eyewash,” Dr Basu advises. “Regular use keeps the eyes fresh, clear, and strong.”
Yashtimadhu: Also known as licorice, Yashtimadhu tackles irritation, redness, and even protects against UV damage. “In today’s environment, with constant sun exposure and digital glare, this herb acts like a natural shield for the eyes,” Dr. Basu shares.
Ashwagandha: Ashwagandha isn’t just for stress—it’s an anti-inflammatory powerhouse for eye strain. “Stress affects vision more than we think. This herb protects the eyes from both internal tension and external triggers like screens,” says Dr Basu.
Fennel: Fennel, or saunf, cools and calms. Whether consumed as tea or used in eyewash form, it relaxes strained eyes. “A splash of fennel water can make a noticeable difference after a long day,” Dr Basu adds.
Saffron: Rich in antioxidants, saffron supports sharp vision and defends against oxidative stress. “It’s especially good for ageing eyes,” Dr Basu notes. "A pinch in warm milk daily is enough to build long-term benefits", he says.
Ghee: “Pure ghee in the eyes? The idea may surprise many,” laughs Dr Basu. He says, "But it works. Applied gently, it cools and nourishes dry, overworked eyes. Its fatty acids provide deep hydration and relief."
Carrot seed oil: Loaded with beta-carotene, this oil supports healthy vision and protects against sunlight damage. Dr Basu recommends small daily amounts in food or as a gentle supplement.
Bringing it all together: These herbs aren’t miracle cures, but nature’s way of offering support. Including them in your daily life, through diet, supplements, or topical treatments, brings holistic benefits. "We don’t need to wait for eye problems to get serious. Start early, stay consistent, and trust the natural rhythm of your body", says Dr Basu.
