Zubeen Garg’s last rites performed in Assam, late singer cremated at Kamarkuchi village on September 23

Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, who died in a scuba diving accident in Singapore, was cremated with full state honours on September 23 at Kamarkuchi village in Sonapur.

Zubeen Garg’s younger sister, Pami Borthakur, performed his last rites.

Hundreds and thousands of fans had gathered in large numbers, with many arriving early in the morning to pay their last respects. The streets were filled with emotional fans as they followed the ambulance carrying Zubeen Garg’s body to the cremation ground.



Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya, Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court Ashutosh Kumar, Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary, Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia, and representatives of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) and others attended the cremation ceremony and offered their last prayers to Zubeen Garg.

Before the final journey, the Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, visited the casket of Zubeen Garg to pay a final goodbye. Sharing the pictures on his official X handle, he tweeted, “A few hours left before #BelovedZubeen begins his final journey. A short while ago, I joined his well wishers at Sarusajai Stadium to pay my tributes.”

The tweet continued, “The last 2 days symbolised the love he commands over people. There will never be another Zubeen.”

The mortal remains of Zubeen Garg were kept in a glass coffin covered with a traditional Assamese gamosa at the Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex till early September 23 for his fans and well-wishers to pay their tributes.

Zubeen Garg's family, close relatives, and even his four pet dogs remained by his side at the stadium.

However, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has also announced that a Samadhi Khetra of Zubeen Garg will be constructed at the last rites site.

Zubeen Garg was a well-known singer in the Bollywood, Assamese and Bengali music industries. He is known for his breakthrough song in the film Gangster. He sang 'Ya Ali' for the film and earned the Best Playback Singer award at the Global Indian Film Awards (GIFA) in 2006.
