The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the death of Assamese music icon Zubeen Garg has arrested musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami. He was reportedly present during the controversial yacht trip that has become a key link in the investigation.

According to India Today, officials confirmed Shekhar Jyoti Goswami’s detention on Thursday, though they have not yet disclosed the exact allegations against him or whether charges will follow. Sources told the publication that questioning is underway as the team works to piece together the events surrounding Zubeen Garg’s final hours.

Probe widens to associates and activists

The Assam government has deployed a 10-member SIT led by Special DGP M.P. Gupta to handle the case. The scope of the probe has already expanded beyond Shekhar Jyoti Goswami.

Entrepreneur and cultural activist Shyamkanu Mahanta is also under the scanner. According to officials, Mahanta has expressed his willingness to surrender, and his arrest appears imminent. In addition, members of the Singapore Assam Association may face questioning over alleged irregularities connected to the case.

Earlier in the day, investigators also raided premises linked to Zubeen Garg’s manager, Siddharth Sharma, in Guwahati’s Datalpara. The CID spent nearly two hours at the building before beginning the search.

Zubeen Garg’s final moments and public outcry

Zubeen Garg died on September 19 in Singapore after what was initially reported as a scuba diving accident. His wife, Garima Saikia Garg, later clarified he suffered a seizure while swimming at Lazarus Island.

Accompanied by close associates including Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Siddharth Sharma, Zubeen Garg was wearing a life jacket during his first swim. It was during a second attempt that tragedy struck. He was rushed to Singapore General Hospital but declared dead at 2:30 pm.

The singer’s body was flown back to Assam and cremated with full state honors, including a 21-gun salute. Public demand, allegations of foul play, and calls for transparency have kept pressure high on authorities to deliver answers.
