As Guwahati turned into a city of mourning for Zubeen Garg, one of the most heart-rending moments of the singer’s final journey unfolded at Sarusajai Stadium. Alongside the lakhs of grieving fans who gathered to bid farewell stood four silent companions, his beloved dogs, Iko, Diya, Rambo and Maya.
Brought in by Zubeen’s wife Garima and other family members, the canines were carried to the podium where his body lay in a glass casket.
It is often said that dogs are a man's best friend and if dogs love you, you are a great man- well for Iko, Diya, Rambo & Maya, Zubeen was their family and today as they bid a final farewell, they must have felt the same emotions which we are feeling now- Heartbroken. pic.twitter.com/687rU0fe7Z— Himanta Biswa Sarma (@himantabiswa) September 22, 2025
In a video that has since gone viral, each dog was shown their master for the last time. The sea of mourners fell into complete silence, many unable to hold back tears as the animals gazed quietly at the man who had been their world.
The emotional tribute struck a chord far beyond Assam. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the clip on X, writing that pets too were mourning alongside millions of fans. “It is often said that dogs are a man’s best friend and if dogs love you, you are a great man. Well, for Iko, Diya, Rambo & Maya, Zubeen was their family and today, as they bid a final farewell, they must have felt the same emotions which we are feeling now – heartbroken,” he wrote.
Zubeen’s love for animals was well known. He often fed strays on the streets and supported animal welfare campaigns.
He worked with People for Animals and in 2018, PETA India recognised him for speaking against animal sacrifices at the Kamakhya Temple. Following his death, PETA remembered him as “a friend, a hero for animals and an inspiration.”
The 52-year-old singer died in Singapore on September 19 in a scuba diving accident. With public questions over the circumstances of his death, the Assam government ordered a second autopsy at Guwahati Medical College before his cremation. “It is not a demand from the public but from certain fringe elements, and we have decided to conduct it with his wife’s consent,” the Chief Minister said.
After the autopsy, Zubeen’s body was taken back to the stadium, from where the funeral procession left for Sonapur. The Assam Police prepared to carry his casket with full state honours, including a 21-gun salute. Representing the Central government, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju was scheduled to attend the last rites.
