Late Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan had starred in a series of blockbusters and delivered several powerful performances that people still talk about. His acting skills and screen presence continue to captivate the viewers even after his death. However, not everyone was a fan of Irrfan Khan.
Irrfan shared screen with legendary actor Rishi Kapoor in the 2013 film D-Day and failed to impress his co-star with his talent and acting style.
During a conversation with film critic Rajeev Masand, director Nikkhil Advani revealed that Rishi Kapoor openly shared his concerns about Irrfan’s acting while shooting the film.
Nikkhil shared that Rishi Kapoor struggled to understand Irrfan Khan's acting style while filming D-Day. Additionally, he left disappointed when Irrfan improvised a scene.
The filmmaker recalled, “When they came together, Rishi Kapoor had heard that Irrfan Khan was this great actor. So he wanted to see it, and fortunately for me, they were doing this one scene where Irrfan decided to improvise. And Irrfan never ever gives the same cue again. So Rishi Kapoor called me and said, ‘Usko samjhao, usko acting nahi aati hai (Talk to him, he doesn’t know acting)."
Filmmaker Nikkhil Advani tried to resolve differences
Nikkhil Advani revealed that he had to intervene to calm Rishi Kapoor down and resolve the issue. He noted, “I told him, ‘Sir, you don’t have to worry. You start speaking whenever you want to speak; don’t worry about him.’”
Irrfan Khan convinced Rishi Kapoor to stay overnight in desert
Further in the interview, Nikkhil Advani recalled that Rishi Kapoor didn’t want to stay at the set overnight in the desert for an early morning scene. However, Irrfan Khan successfully convinced him.
Nikkhil said, “He was refusing to comply with a morning shoot, but Irrfan managed to convince him to spend the night in the desert with us with the promise of Chicken Jungli and alcohol. It was a near-impossible feat in Kutch, but he delivered his promise, and I got my shot."
For the unversed, Irrfan Khan and Rishi Kapoor starred alongside a talented cast, including Shruti Haasan, Arjun Rampal, and Huma Qureshi in D-Day. The action thriller revolves around intelligence officer Wali Khan and a team of highly-trained officers who are set to nab Goldman, one of India's most wanted terrorists. However, their mission is threatened by a minor miscalculation.
Meanwhile, both Irrfan Khan and Rishi Kapoor died just a day apart in April 2020. Irrfan passed away on April 29, followed by Rishi Kapoor on April 30. The Indian film industry still mourns the death of the two legendary actors who have left a memorable legacy behind them.
