On the fourth death anniversary of legendary singer SP Balasubrahmanyam (SPB), Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin paid tribute to the iconic artist by renaming a street in Chennai in his honour.
The street, where SPB had resided, is now called S. P. Balasubrahmanyam Road, a fitting recognition of the singer’s immense contribution to Indian music. This gesture was a response to a heartfelt request from SPB’s family, particularly his son SP Charan, who had hoped to see the road named after his father.
Expressing his gratitude, SP Charan took to X (formerly Twitter) to thank the Tamil Nadu government and CM Stalin for granting his wish. In his message, Charan wrote, “As a family member of #SPB & representing the fans of #Paadumnila, I’m grateful to the government of TN @CMOTamilnadu, @mkstalin, sports minister @Udhaystalin & other ministers for granting our wish to rename Kamdar Nagar Main Rd as S. P. Balasubrahmanyam Rd. Humbled. #SPBliveson.” The tribute acknowledges SPB’s vast legacy, which continues to inspire fans and artists across generations.

Born on June 4, 1946, in Konetammapeta, Andhra Pradesh, SP Balasubrahmanyam made his debut as a playback singer in the 1960s with the Telugu film Sri Sri Sri Maryada Ramanna.
However, it was the Tamil film Ganeshana Maduve that propelled him to fame. Over the course of his illustrious career, SPB lent his voice to thousands of songs across various Indian languages, spanning romantic ballads, energetic dance numbers, and devotional tracks.

His versatility and emotive singing made him one of the most beloved and respected playback singers in the Indian film industry.
In recognition of his exceptional contributions, SPB received numerous accolades, including six National Film Awards. His melodious voice became synonymous with Indian cinema, making him a household name.

Tragically, in 2020, SPB passed away after prolonged hospitalization due to complications from COVID-19, marking the end of an era in Indian music. His contribution, however, continues to live on through his vast body of work and the enduring love of his fans.
In 2021, he was posthumously awarded the prestigious Padma Vibhushan, one of India’s highest civilian honours. SPB's son, SP Charan, also a singer, continues to preserve and carry forward his father's musical legacy, ensuring that SPB’s voice remains a guiding light in the industry.
