Squid Game actor Lee Byung Hun, who played the Frontman in the Netflix Korean thriller, recently received a Special Tribute Award at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

He was among the four honorees, alongside Hollywood actress Jodie Foster, director Guillermo del Toro, and filmmaker Hikari. The IFF Tribute Awards ceremony was held on September 8 at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto, Canada.

While accepting the award, Lee expressed his gratitude and said, “Congratulations to the 'Toronto International Film Festival' on its 50th anniversary. I’m proud to be part of such a wonderful celebration.”

The actor also talked about his journey and continued, “I began acting in television dramas 35 years ago, but I always carried a deep love for cinema in my heart.”

Lee further recalled his role in Park Chan Wook’s 2000 film Joint Security Area (JSA), which earned him recognition and noted that he fulfilled my dream of appearing in a box-office hit through the project.

However, the actor delighted his fans with the announcement of the new project. He suggested that his upcoming project is based on an idea he first heard from Park 15 years ago.

He said, “After 25 years, I’ve come to present a new film. This story, which I once heard from Director Park, has finally been realised on screen. It’s a film that must be seen,” he emphasised. “And in the future, I hope to continue sharing works that audiences simply cannot miss.”

Lee concluded his speech with, “I believe this award recognises the remarkable achievements and growth of Korean culture. I accept it with deep humility.”

Now in its seventh year, the Tribute Awards honour actors, directors, and other creatives who have made exceptional contributions to world cinema. The 50th Toronto International Film Festival will continue through September 14.
