The Odia film and music fraternity is in deep mourning after the news that celebrated composer and singer Abhijit Majumdar died on Sunday, January 25, 2026, at the age of 54. Majumdar breathed his last at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where he had been receiving treatment for months for a host of serious health issues. His passing marks the end of an era for Ollywood, where his music had become synonymous with emotional depth and melody.

Majumdar’s health had been precarious since late 2025, when he was first admitted to hospital with severe complications. Over the course of his illness, he battled a complex combination of conditions, including a neurological disorder, severe pneumonia, bloodstream infection, chronic liver issues, hypertension and electrolyte imbalances. In September 2025, his family admitted him to AIIMS after his condition worsened, and he remained under intensive medical care, including time in the Medical ICU.

Despite intermittent signs of improvement — including a brief period when he was off ventilator support — Majumdar’s condition deteriorated again in January. On January 23, he developed a new infection that rapidly progressed to refractory septic shock. According to hospital sources, he suffered a cardiac arrest early on January 25 and, despite emergency resuscitation efforts, could not be revived and was declared dead later that morning.

Born in Cuttack, Abhijit Majumdar began his musical journey in 1991 and over more than three decades became one of the most influential composers in Odisha. He contributed to over 700 songs spanning Odia films, music albums and Sambalpuri projects, earning him widespread acclaim and a devoted fan base across the state. His work included iconic film soundtracks and beloved melodies that resonated with audiences of all ages.

Tributes have poured in from fans, colleagues and prominent figures in the entertainment community. Odisha’s Chief Minister also expressed sorrow, calling Majumdar’s death a “irreparable loss” to culture and music. He is survived by his wife, Ranjita Majumdar, and their son, and will be remembered as a towering figure whose music helped shape the sound of Ollywood.
