Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light earns BAFTA nomination for best foreign Film

Payal Kapadia's All We Imagine As Light brought recognition to India by earning a nomination at the EE BAFTA Film Awards. The film received a nod in the Best Film Not in the English Language category, marking a significant achievement. The nominations were unveiled on Wednesday by actors Mia McKenna-Bruce and Will Sharpe.

Payal Kapadia missed out on nominations in the Best Director and Best Original Screenplay categories at the BAFTAs. Her film, All We Imagine As Light, which was longlisted in three categories—Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Not in the English Language—ultimately secured only one nomination, in the latter category. Competing with Kapadia's film are Emilia Perez, The Seed of the Sacred Fig, I'm Still Here, and Kneecap.

Previously, Payal Kapadia earned a nomination for Best Director at the Golden Globe Awards, a significant milestone in her career. However, the award went to Brady Corbet for The Brutalist. Her film, All We Imagine As Light, was also nominated in the Best Film Not in the English Language category but lost to Emilia Perez.

Despite these setbacks, the nominations underscore Kapadia's growing prominence in global cinema. All We Imagine As Light continues to resonate with audiences and critics, cementing her reputation as a filmmaker with a unique voice. These acknowledgments reflect the increasing recognition of Indian storytelling on prestigious international platforms.

All We Imagine As Light is a heartwarming tale centered around two Malayali nurses, Prabha and Anu. Prabha’s world is turned upside down when her estranged husband surprises her with an unexpected gift, while Anu navigates the challenges of finding a private space to be with her lover. Directed by Payal Kapadia, this poignant ode to Mumbai stars Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam, and Hridhu Haroon.

The film began its award-winning journey with the prestigious Grand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festival in May. It premiered on Disney+ Hotstar in India on January 3, offering audiences a chance to experience its beautifully woven narrative.

The BAFTA Film Awards will stream live and exclusively in India on Lionsgate Play on 16th February.
