American singer and songwriter, Lana Del Rey, who is also a mega pop star in the internet community said that she wrote a song as a Bond theme but was actually turned down by the film’s producers.
Lana Del Rey is a music icon and major phenomenon. Her music has been so loved and worshipped all over the world that she has turned into a sort of personality. Lana Del Rey’s style oscillates between glamorous allure and unfiltered authenticity, with her words often spoken nonchalantly to highlight the mundane reality lurking behind the dramatic facade.
At the Ivor Novello Awards in London having just been honored with a special award recognizing her career and impact on the industry, she was asked backstage whether she would ever consider writing a Bond theme. To which the singer replied, “I mean, how has that not happened yet?”
The ‘Video game’ star then hymned the chorus of her numeral titled song from her 2015 album, Honeymoon, ‘24’. Then revealing that she wrote that track for them.
The theme was eventually taken over by Sam Smith who won an Academy Award for his song, ‘Writings on the Wall.’
Lana sang Smith’s praises coyly saying, “But Sam, you did a wonderful job really.” Then chuckling “I’m just kidding.”
“One day maybe…” said the singer. “Probably not but I’m still gonna continue doing my Nancy Sinatra thing every now and then and just pretend that it’s the titled track.”
But Lana isn’t the only who hasn’t been able to own the Bond theme as their own. There has been many artists who shot their shot but missed. One of the most recognizable and sensational bands the world has witnessed couldn’t quite land their pitch either. Radiohead’s ‘Man of War’ was first turned down when the English rock band submitted their Bond-like theme. After getting another chance at securing the bag, they worked on a new record titled, ‘Spectre’ which was also ultimately rejected.
Other than Lana Del Rey and Radiohead’s knock-back, the other notable artists who too were turned down are, Pulp, Blondie, Johnny Cash, Pet Shop Boys and KD Lang.
