Bollywood has always been graced by artists whose talent transcended time, and among its brightest stars was Sridevi. With her unmatched screen presence, timeless beauty, and rare ability to adapt to every genre, she left an indelible mark on cinema and the hearts of millions. Though she is no longer with us, her work, words, and philosophy towards life and art continue to inspire generations.
On her birth anniversary, acclaimed filmmaker Shekhar Kapur shared a nostalgic memory along with her iconic still from the Hawa Hawai song in Mr India. He recalled a conversation with a journalist:
“‘It’s Sridevi’s Birthday today,’ said the journalist.
‘Can you give us a bite?’
‘How long do you have?’ I asked.
‘However long you need.’
‘A lifetime,’ I said.”
Over her illustrious career, Sridevi worked across Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada cinema, creating magic in every frame. From the romantic Chandni to the double delight of ChaalBaaz, from the poignant Lamhe to the empowering English Vinglish, each role revealed a different facet of her artistry.
For her fans, every film she touched was a masterpiece. Yet, for Sridevi herself, one film held a special place—Mr India. In an old interview with Colors Cineplex, she revealed:
“In every film, for an artist, the director plays the biggest role. I really enjoyed my experience in Mr India. It was my best film, I can say, because it was the first time I did something different from a glamorous role. People started saying, ‘I think she can also act.’”
She fondly recalled the famous Charlie Chaplin sequence, which was initially meant to be a small moment. However, once she got into costume and began performing, Shekhar Kapur was so captivated by her comic brilliance that he expanded it into one of the film’s most beloved scenes.
