‘X-Men’ star Ian McKellen releases statement after being hospitalised, ‘I am looking forward to returning to work’

Ian McKellen was hospitalised on Monday after a stage fall during his performance in 'Player Kings' at London's Noël Coward Theatre. The 'Lord of The Rings' actor expressed gratitude to supporters and medical staff in a statement.

Ian McKellen was rushed to the hospital on Monday after falling off the stage while performing. In a statement, the ‘Lord of The Rings’ actor has thanked his well wishers and the medical professionals who supported him during the performance of ‘Player Kings’ at the Noël Coward theatre in London.

“I want to thank everyone for their kind messages and support. Since the accident, during a performance of Player Kings last night, my injuries have been diagnosed and treated by a series of experts, specialists and nurses working for the National Health Service. To them, of course, I am hugely indebted. They have assured me that my recovery will be complete and speedy and I am looking forward to returning to work,” Ian McKellen said via a statement by sent by his publicist, Clair Dobbs.

Ian McKellen, who plays John Falstaff in ‘Player Kings’ reportedly lost his balance during a fight scene and fell off the front of the stage. After the actor fell, the support staff rushed to tend to McKellen and as the house lights came up, the audience was evacuated.

After the incident, a theatre spokesperson revealed that Ian McKellen was in "good spirits" and is expected to "make a speedy and full recovery.”

“Thank you to our audience and the general public for their well wishes following Ian’s fall during this evening’s performance of ‘Player Kings.’ Following a scan, the brilliant NHS team have assured us that he will make a speedy and full recovery and Ian is in good spirits,” the statement read, “Thank you to doctors Rachel and Lee who were on hand in the audience and to all the venue staff for their support,” it concluded.

The show scheduled for Tuesday night has also been canceled so that McKellen could rest. But he will be back on Wednesday for a matinee performance of the play.

The play is based on Henry IV, Parts One and Two.
