Keanu Reeves, renowned for his roles in The Matrix and John Wick, has opened up about his reflections on mortality while promoting his upcoming novel, The Book of Elsewhere.
The Matrix star revealed in a recent interview with BBC News that he often thinks about death. The 59-year-old actor shared that this introspection has deepened his appreciation for life and relationships.
Keanu Reeves' debut novel, The Book of Elsewhere, co-authored with China Miéville, delves into profound questions of life and death. The story follows an immortal warrior seeking an end to his eternal existence. Inspired by the concept of a character incapable of dying, which emerged during the creation of John Wick: Chapter 2, the novel explores themes of violence, love, and the human condition through the lens of an 80,000-year-old protagonist.
The actor revealed that writing his novel was a deeply personal experience. He shared that the creative process brought to light personal reflections, including contemplations on life, death, and unresolved childhood issues.
According to New York Times reports, the actor said, "It surprised me in the creative act, what gets revealed to oneself. Maybe the creative act is a kind of talking, you know. And so maybe I have father issues and mother issues. And maybe I think about death."
Matt Kindt, Reeves' collaborator on The Book of Elsewhere, suggested that the character's journey reflects the actor's own experiences with loss. Given Reeves' history of personal tragedy, including the deaths of his girlfriend, their unborn child, and a close friend, Kindt implies that the novel serves as an outlet for the actor to process these profound experiences.
Meanwhile, Hooda's Hollywood hustle continues with the upcoming release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and a slated appearance in the John Wick spinoff, Ballerina 2025.
