As Sharmila Tagore prepares to walk the red carpet at Cannes 2025, her daughter-in-law, actress Kareena Kapoor, has expressed her wholehearted support and excitement for her.
At the Cannes Film Festival, Satyajit Ray's 1970 masterpiece Aranyer Din Ratri (Days and Nights in the Forest), which has long been considered a cornerstone of Indian cinema, will triumphantly return to the global scene.
In a statement, Sharmila Tagore mentioned, “It’s wonderful that Manik Da’s Aranyer Din Ratri has been restored and will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this year. I have wonderful memories of the time spent with my co-actors, and Manikda’s precision, especially in how he shot the memory game sequence, was incredible. I can’t wait to watch the restored film. Aranyer Din Ratri is such a contemporary film, and I’m sure it will resonate with new audiences worldwide today."
Kareena Kapoor Khan, who has long appreciated Indian cinema's heritage, expressed her excitement about the film's impending Cannes premiere on her Instagram Stories. She expressed her respect for the actress by posting a picture of a still from Sharmila Tagore's movie along with the words "Legend" and a red heart emoticon.
The anticipation for this esteemed occasion is evident as the restored 4K version of the movie will be shown in the Cannes Classics section beginning on May 13.
The film features some of the finest names in Indian cinema, including the legendary Soumitra Chatterjee and Sharmila Tagore, both of whom delivered stellar performances.
In order to represent the movie and India on this renowned international platform, Tagore, who was instrumental in its creation, will be at Cannes.
Ray's masterwork examines themes of class, modernity, and alienation by following four urban men who take a vacation in the Palamau forests and discover that their lives have changed.
A new generation of viewers will be able to enjoy the film in its restored splendour thanks to the 4K restoration, which was finished using the original camera and sound negatives that producer Purnima Dutta saved.
