Jaaved Jaaferi urges audience to watch small movies in Theatres: Independent cinema should stay alive, its light doesn't go out

Jaaved Jaaferi, a renowned actor, has urged audiences to support independent cinema by watching small films in theatres rather than waiting for digital releases. Speaking about his latest film, Inn Galiyon Mein, Javed Jaaferi emphasized the importance of keeping indie cinema alive, stating, “Its light shouldn’t go out.”

In an interview with Hindustan Times, Jaaved Jaaferi highlighted the struggles independent films face in gaining box office success without the backing of big stars. Despite Inn Galiyon Mein receiving positive responses, it has not been a commercial blockbuster. “People sometimes say, ‘We will watch this one at home.’ The thing is, you need to encourage such films so that independent cinema stays alive,” he explained.

Javed Jaaferi acknowledged that mainstream Bollywood largely avoids message-driven stories, but he praised filmmakers like Rajkumar Hirani for integrating meaningful narratives into their commercial films. “He has understood that if he wants to make a socially relevant film, he needs a big star so that, at least, people will come to the theatres,” Jaaferi noted.

He also expressed optimism about the new generation of actors and filmmakers embracing rooted storytelling. “There is hope when I see small films starring Rajkummar Rao or Ayushmann Khurrana that may not be big blockbusters, but they earn money. They leave a mark,” he said.

With independent films struggling for visibility in theatres, Jaaferi’s appeal is a reminder that audience support is crucial for sustaining diverse storytelling in Indian cinema.
