  • Priyanka Chopra shines as action star in 'The Bluff'
  • Film set in 1846 Caribbean, focuses on revenge and family
  • Action scenes impress but story lacks depth and originality

‘The Bluff,’ directed by Frank E. Flowers, will begin streaming on Prime Video on 25 February and stars Priyanka Chopra, Karl Urban, Safia Oakley-Green, Ismael Cruz Cordova, and Vedanten Naidoo.

‘The Bluff’ makes one thing clear: Priyanka Chopra Jonas has all the qualities of a full-fledged action star. Set in 1846, the film places her in a period backdrop where she goes all out in brutal, high-energy combat scenes. You genuinely enjoy watching her kicks and the ease with which she handles a knife. That said, this adventure drama survives mainly on its action.

Priyanka Chopra goes full throttle

The plot is wafer-thin and follows a familiar revenge arc that works only in parts. Just when you feel the conflict might stretch further, the film wraps up. It never overstays its welcome. Ultimately, ‘The Bluff’ is an average outing that depends heavily on its action set pieces. If you are searching for a fresh or layered story, there is very little here to surprise you.

A past that refuses to fade

Set in the Caribbean islands in 1846, the story centers on ‘Bloody Mary,' once a feared pirate, now living a quiet life with her husband TH Bodden (Ismael Cruz Cordova), their son Isaac (Vedanten Naidoo), and her sister-in-law Elizabeth (Safia Oakley-Green). Her son and sister-in-law know nothing about her violent past.

Trouble begins when her former captain, Francisco Connor, captures her husband and demands the location of the gold she once stole from him. After discovering Cayman Barc, the island where she now lives, Connor arrives with his crew and unleashes chaos. For Bloody Mary, also known as Ercell, this becomes a battle between her buried past and her present life. She must fight again, this time to protect her family at any cost.

Visual appeal over depth

The film looks visually rich, and the makers recreate the era with care. The pace is brisk, and the scenes move quickly enough to hold attention. However, without a gripping storyline, the impact dilutes after a point.

What truly stays with you is Priyanka Chopra’s fearless screen presence and her commanding, swashbuckling energy. Early on, the film informs viewers that the age of pirates in the Caribbean is coming to an end, and those left behind are desperate for survival. The rugged beauty of the region is captured well, and the cinematography enhances the milieu of the film. It briefly touches upon the historical and cultural setting, but once the action begins, the tone turns harsh and relentless.

Priyanka shoulders the film

Priyanka Chopra carries the film almost entirely on her own. As Ercell, also known as Bloody Mary, she fully commits to the role. She shines in emotional scenes with her son and sister-in-law, bringing warmth and vulnerability. In contrast, her pirate persona is fierce and deadly, and she handles the action sequences with confidence. Karl Urban as Captain Francisco Connor is intimidating and plays the villain with cold menace. Vedanten Naidoo gives a sincere performance as Isaac, and you feel for his character, especially given his physical condition. Safia Oakley-Green and Ismael Cruz Cordova have limited screen time but deliver honest performances.

Scale without substance

With producers like Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Zoe Saldana, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas attached to the project, the scale and polish are evident. The production design feels grand, and no effort has been spared in creating a believable world. Still, beyond watching Priyanka perform daring stunts, the film offers little else. A deeper exploration of Connor and Ercell’s shared past would have added weight to the plot, as their backstory is only briefly touched upon. The emotional stakes needed more time to breathe. A stronger script could have turned this into a far more engaging action drama. In the end, this film works best for devoted fans of Priyanka Chopra Jonas.
