Hollywood legend George Clooney has officially become a French citizen, along with his wife Amal Alamuddin Clooney and their eight-year-old twins, according to a decree published in France’s government gazette and seen by AFP on Monday.
The move reflects more than just paperwork—it’s a nod to the family’s desire for privacy and a slower pace of life, something the actor has long admired in France.
“I love the French culture, your language, even if I'm still bad at it after 400 days of courses,” the 64-year-old told RTL radio in December. “Here, they don't take photos of kids. There aren't any paparazzi hidden at the school gates. That's number one for us.”
For George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin Clooney, raising their twins away from the constant glare of cameras has clearly been a priority.
George Clooney’s connection to Europe began well before his marriage to Amal Alamuddin Clooney, a British-Lebanese human rights lawyer fluent in French.
Over the years, the couple has built a life across the continent, with properties that blend comfort and privacy. George Clooney has owned an estate in Italy’s idyllic Lake Como since 2002, while Amal Alamuddin Clooney and he bought a historic manor in England.
In 2021, they added a former wine estate near the village of Brignoles in southern France, known as Domaine du Canadel, which has become their family sanctuary.
Though they also have a New York apartment and a home in Kentucky, the Clooneys have sold properties in Los Angeles and Mexico over the past decade, consolidating their family life around Europe.
“We’re happiest” at their French estate, George Clooney has said, emphasising that for them, home is where privacy and peace come first, even amid a whirlwind of global travel.

Outside of family life, George Clooney remains a Hollywood powerhouse, with two Oscars to his name: one for Best Supporting Actor for 2006’s Syriana and another as a producer on 2012’s Argo. He has also earned millions through endorsements, including Nespresso, and received a windfall from selling his stake in a tequila brand.
George Clooney isn’t the only American star drawn to France. Director Jim Jarmusch recently told France Inter radio that he plans to apply for French nationality, saying he wanted “a place that will allow me to escape from the United States” and praising French culture.
