Daniel Radcliffe has openly discussed his intoxication during some scenes in the Harry Potter films, acknowledging that he used alcohol as a coping mechanism for the intense pressure and stardom he experienced as a child.
In an interview with Off Camera, the 36-year-old actor reflected on his adolescence and the psychological toll of being in the spotlight all the time. He revealed that he often felt like people were always watching him, and drinking became a way to escape that anxiety. “The quickest way to forget about the fact that you’re being watched is to get very drunk,” he said.
However, what started as a coping mechanism soon became a vicious cycle. “And then as you get very drunk, you become aware that people are watching even more because now you’re drunk, so you drink more to ignore that,” he added.
Radcliffe clarified that he “never drank at work,” but admitted that he sometimes arrived on set still drunk from the night before. “I went into work still drunk, but I never drank at work. I can point to many scenes where I’m just gone. Dead behind the eyes,” he told The Independent.
Despite his struggles, Radcliffe maintained that his issues never interfered with his professionalism or his love for acting. “I loved going to set, and there was never a day where my own [feelings] would affect how I was on set. There was never a moment where I wished I wasn’t Harry Potter,” he said.

Radcliffe has previously spoken about his battle with alcohol, revealing that he quit drinking in 2010 after several failed attempts. He has now been sober for over a decade.
Interestingly, he isn’t the only actor to admit to drinking or using substances while filming. Others include Jennifer Lawrence during Catching Fire, Andrew McCarthy in Pretty in Pink, and Norm Macdonald while working on Billy Madison.
On the professional front, reports suggest that Radcliffe is currently in talks for a new comedy series alongside Tracy Morgan, though the project has yet to be officially confirmed.
