Actress Anne Hathaway was among several prominent stars and fashion personalities, including Elizabeth Hurley and Anna Wintour, who attended the funeral of legendary designer Valentino Garavani in Rome on Friday.
The attendees were seen arriving in solemn black ensembles at the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels and Martyrs, located in Rome’s Piazza della Repubblica, where the funeral service was held.
Valentino Garavani, co-founder of the iconic luxury fashion house Valentino, passed away on Monday at the age of 93. He died peacefully at his residence in Rome, surrounded by his loved ones, according to a statement shared on the Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti Foundation’s Instagram account.
Anne Hathaway was among the first to arrive at the service. She was dressed in a tailored black jacket and oversized sunglasses, maintaining a dignified and understated appearance. The actress, who is gearing up for the release of her fashion-centric film The Devil Wears Prada 2 in May, was accompanied by her husband, Adam Shulman.
Paying tribute to the fashion icon, Anne shared an emotional message on social media, writing, "For the last twenty years, it has been my extraordinary honor to have known, loved and been cared for by the great Valentino Garavani. He is a beloved, world-renown, Titan of a designer, but he was also my dear and cherished friend who educated me, raised me, sent me flowers every year on my birthday, made me laugh, was my dancing and karaoke partner on so many joyful nights, and who made my world so much brighter, grander and more delightful than I could have ever understood it to be. When I was married in 2012, he offered to make me a custom couture wedding dress, a gesture so generous it still brings tears to my eyes."
She further added, "Now he rests forever surrounded by eternal beauty, a most fitting next chapter for the one true Emperor who gifted us all a legacy of unparalled magnificence... I love you my darling, and I miss you already. I write this with deepest love and utmost sympathy for his entire family who I hold in my heart at this tender time x."
Her tribute reflected the deep bond and long-standing friendship she shared with the designer, highlighting how profoundly moved she has been by his passing.
Apart from the actress, several A-list fashion designers and celebrities also attended his funeral and paid their last tributes including the CEO of Christian Dior SE, Antoine Arnault, Italian fashion designers Donatella Versace and Anna Fendi, Tom Ford, among others.
Over the decades, Valentino's designs were worn by royals, first ladies, and Hollywood icons, including Diana, Princess of Wales, Elizabeth Taylor, and former US First Lady Jacqueline “Jackie” Kennedy Onassis.
Valentino Garavani, famed for his signature Valentino Red, played a defining role in shaping high fashion throughout the late 20th century after launching his brand in 1960.
