Legendary actor, filmmaker, and lyricist Manoj Kumar’s passing has left a void in the hearts of countless admirers, fans, and especially those who had the privilege of working alongside him. Among those deeply affected is veteran actress and politician Hema Malini, who shared a warm and enduring professional and personal bond with the late actor. Hema Malini had played the role of his wife in the superhit film Kranti.
“Since morning, I have been feeling very sad. The news of Manoj ji’s passing has left me deeply emotional,” Hema Malini said, her voice laden with grief and nostalgia. “We may not have met recently, but we were in touch. We would often communicate over the phone. In fact, he would personally call whenever he read something about my work or saw my photo in the newspaper. That was the kind of man he was — thoughtful, respectful, and full of admiration for others’ work," she told Vickey Lalwani.
Recalling her time working with the veteran actor, Hema Malini couldn’t help but praise his cinematic brilliance. “I am lucky to have worked with a visionary like Manoj ji. He made several wonderful films — most of them reflective of the socio-political environment of the time. He understood the pulse of the nation and used his films as a medium to communicate powerful messages.”
She fondly remembered their collaborations in classics like Kranti, Sanyasi, Dus Numbri, and Santosh. “Each of those films had a deep message. He never needed to shout through his films. His storytelling was subtle, yet impactful. That was his true strength. It was so beautiful how he could convey such strong patriotic feelings and social commentary in such an artistic way.”
More than just a co-star or director, Hema Malini saw Manoj Kumar as a mentor and friend. “He was not only a brilliant actor but also an ace director. His knowledge of the craft was unmatched. He made films about the country, about our identity, our people. There was an honesty in his storytelling that today’s filmmakers often miss.”

Reflecting on the current state of cinema, she lamented the absence of creators like him. “Why don’t we have filmmakers like him anymore? Almost all the great producers and directors I worked with are gone,” she said, visibly emotional. “They belonged to a different era — one that believed in cinema with purpose, with emotion, and with strong values.”
As the nation mourns the loss of a true legend, Hema Malini’s heartfelt tribute serves as a poignant reminder of Manoj Kumar’s unparalleled contribution to Indian cinema. His legacy continues to inspire generations, and through voices like Hema Malini’s, the memory of his brilliance, humility, and artistry will continue to live on.
