Emma Watson is back in the headlines this week, and not for a movie. The 35-year-old Harry Potter star, who hasn’t appeared on screen since 2019’s Little Women, has been unusually candid in recent interviews, touching on J.K. Rowling, her acting break, and even world politics.
In a cover story for Hollywood Authentic, Emma Watson told filmmaker Hassan Akkad she misses the craft of acting but not the “soul-destroying” promotion that comes with it. “I don’t miss selling things,” Emma Watson admitted. “But I do very much miss using my skill-set.”
On J.K. Rowling and Their Rift
The tension between J.K. Rowling and the Harry Potter trio has been well-documented since the author’s anti-trans views made headlines. Rowling once said she would “never forgive” Emma Watson and her co-stars for supporting trans rights.
Asked about that, Emma Watson told Jay Shetty on his On Purpose podcast that the bond she shared with Rowling isn’t erased by political differences. “I don’t believe that holding the views I do means I can’t treasure Jo,” Emma Watson said. “I’ll always keep the personal experiences I had with her.”
It was a rare, thoughtful acknowledgment from Emma Watson, who made clear she hopes love can survive disagreement.
Speaking on Gaza and Hollywood Friendships
Emma Watson also used the podcast to reflect on the war in Gaza, urging empathy on both sides. “You have to be allowed to care about 50,000 civilians dying… and care deeply about the victims of this awful terrorist attack,” she said.
The actress admitted Hollywood was tough on her socially. After years of working on Harry Potter, Emma Watson expected every set to feel like family. “I really got my ass kicked,” she said bluntly, describing rejection and loneliness outside the franchise.
Still, Emma Watson isn’t closing the door on acting. “I’ll never say I’ll quit,” she noted, though she no longer feels urgency to return.
