The 15-minute standing ovation for Sentimental Value is the longest of the year at Cannes, surpassing the 11.5 minutes of applause received by Julia Ducournau's film Alpha earlier in the festival. The response sparked speculation that Trier's film could be a strong contender for the Palme d'Or.
According to the official plot synopsis, Sentimental Value follows sisters Nora and Agnes as they “reunite with their estranged father, the charismatic Gustav, a once-renowned director who offers stage actress Nora a role in what he hopes will be his comeback film.”
However, when Nora declines, she finds out he's given her role to a young Hollywood star instead. This sets off a chain of events where the two sisters must navigate their complicated relationship with their father and deal with the sudden arrival of the American star, who disrupts their already complex family dynamics.
The film also stars Cory Michael Smith and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas in supporting roles. Trier penned the script with his frequent collaborator Eskil Vogt. It explores an intimate and moving dynamics of family, memories, and the reconciliatory power of art.
