Border 2, one of the most anticipated Hindi war dramas in recent years, is steadily building buzz as it inches closer to its theatrical release. Nearly three decades after J.P. Dutta’s Border became a defining film of its genre, the sequel is returning with scale, star power, and now, a runtime that has become a talking point across the trade.

According to reports doing the rounds, Border 2 clocks in at 3 hours and 19 minutes, making it one of the longest mainstream Hindi releases in recent times.

While the makers are yet to officially confirm the duration, the reported runtime has already sparked discussions among exhibitors and audiences alike.

If the reported length holds true, Border 2 would be only slightly shorter than Dhurandhar, which recently ran for a hefty 3 hours and 34 minutes.

The extended duration is said to be influencing release strategies at both single screens and multiplexes. As per a Bollywood Hungama report, distributors are pushing for an aggressive theatrical rollout, particularly capitalising on the Republic Day weekend. Single-screen theatres have reportedly been asked to dedicate all their daily shows exclusively to Border 2 for the first two weeks after release.

Multiplex chains, too, are said to be aligning with the plan. Four-screen properties are reportedly expected to allot around 14 shows per day, five-screen cinemas 16 shows, six-screen venues 18 shows, and properties with seven or more screens could run up to 20 shows daily. The long runtime naturally reduces the number of possible screenings per screen, but the expectation is that strong demand will compensate for it.

A source familiar with the release strategy shared that a 3 hour and 19 minute runtime effectively translates into a four-hour gap between shows once intervals and turnaround time are factored in. This means that even three-screen cinemas may end up allocating all their shows to Border 2 alone, leaving no room for competing releases during the initial run.

Directed by Anurag Singh, Border 2 features an ensemble cast led by Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh and Ahan Shetty. The film also stars Sonam Bajwa, Mona Singh, Medha Rana and Anya Singh in key roles. There is additional buzz around possible appearances by Suniel Shetty, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Akshaye Khanna, though no official confirmation has been made so far.

Advance bookings are reportedly off to a promising start across major multiplex chains. Riding on the legacy of the original Border, its patriotic theme, and a high-profile cast, Border 2 is slated to hit theatres on January 23, with expectations riding high despite, or perhaps because of, its marathon runtime.
