It’s been only two weeks since its release, but Bon Appétit, Your Majesty is already one of Netflix’s biggest K-drama talking points of the year. The series, starring Im Yoon-Ah and Lee Chae-Min, has climbed the charts globally, sparking comparisons with tvN’s earlier blockbuster titles like Crash Landing on You and Queen of Tears.
The drama’s journey to the screen wasn’t without turbulence. Originally, Park Sung-Hoon of Squid Game 2 fame was cast opposite Yoona. But after his December 2024 controversy, the production swiftly replaced him with rising star Lee Chae-Min. Despite the chaos, the change worked in the show’s favor, as Yoona and Chae-Min’s on-screen chemistry has already drawn rave reviews.
At its core, Bon Appétit, Your Majesty is a playful time-slip drama. Yoona plays Yeon Ji-Yeong, a modern-day French cuisine chef who unexpectedly lands in the Joseon era. There, she encounters King Yi-Heon (Chae-Min), a monarch notorious for his tyranny but also revered as a gourmet with an impossibly refined palate. To survive in this strange past, Ji-Yeong must cook fusion dishes fit for a king—meals that can either win his favor or cost her life.
The series mixes romance, comedy, and culinary passion with striking ease. Five elements, in particular, have made it a fan favorite:
A clever blend of food and history that feels fresh despite being rooted in familiar tropes.
The casting of Yoona and Chae-Min, whose visuals and chemistry elevate the storytelling.
A rom-com tone peppered with humor, especially in Ji-Yeong’s modern references that leave the king hilariously puzzled. Breathtaking cinematography that makes every frame lush and immersive.

Within its first fortnight, the drama has already become the 15th highest-rated tvN show of all time. It posted an impressive 13.1 percent viewership in Seoul for episode six, peaking at 15.1 percent. That places it ahead of several competing titles still on air, such as Twelve and Confidence Man KR.
