Imran Khan, who stepped away from Bollywood nearly a decade ago, is finally set to return, and his comeback project has already stirred a wave of excitement among fans.
After years of speculation, the actor has confirmed that his new film marks a reunion with Break Ke Baad (2010) director Danish Aslam. There were rumours that the duo might be working on a sequel to the much-loved romantic comedy starring Deepika Padukone.
While Imran has refrained from calling it a sequel, he admitted that the new film carries the emotional and creative continuity of what the Break Ke Baad team would naturally attempt “15 years later.”
Speaking to Hindustan Times, he shared, “The movie is just like what the team of Break Ke Baad would be doing 15 years later in life. It's a natural progression. Danish and I now have collective life experience. He's been married, I've been through a divorce. It's just the film we should make 15 years later. This is very much a personal project that came from the creative urge of wanting to tell a story and working with dear friends. The shoot is complete and it's in post production. We are looking at releasing it once the streaming platform decides on the date.”
Imran and Danish, who collaborated on the 2010 film that explored young love, ambition and commitment, now bring a deeper, more lived-in perspective to storytelling.
Another notable shift is in the cast. While Break Ke Baad starred Deepika Padukone, the upcoming film features Bhumi Pednekar in the lead, along with Gurfateh Pirzada. Imran revealed that the casting process was unanimous and organic.
“It was a co creative decision, we all agreed on her and what she would bring to the film, we were pretty upfront about it. She brought a good vibe to the set and it was the same with Gurfateh (Pirzada). In fact, this is the happiest set I've ever been on,” he said.
Imran Khan was last seen on the big screen in Katti Batti (2015) opposite Kangana Ranaut. Following a long absence and a period of personal upheaval, including his divorce from Avantika Malik in 2019, the actor maintained a low profile.
