BBC releases Sidhu Moosewala documentary 'The Killing Call' despite his father Balkaur Singh's legal lawsuit

Sidhu Moosewala documentary faces legal challenges

Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala was gunned down in broad daylight in 2022, leaving his fans devastated. However, the BBC World Service released a two-part documentary titled The Killing Call, giving a glimpse into his murder. The documentary also featured an audio clip of the gangster Goldy Brar’s confession of killing the singer.

However, the BBC documentary faced legal issues ahead of the release. Moosewala’s father, Balkaur Singh, requested the court in Mansa to put a ban on the documentary, and the matter was still in the court.

Civil Judge Rajinder Singh Nagpal dismissed a plea by Balkaur Singh to temporarily halt the documentary's release and has scheduled a full hearing for June 12.

Balkaur named the BBC and two individuals, Ishleen Kaur and Ankur Jain, as respondents in his lawsuit.

Moosewala’s father’s lawyer, Satinder Pal Singh, claimed that the singer’s family believes the documentary could affect the ongoing criminal trial into Moosewala’s murder. The lawyer also alleges that the release of the documentary could breach their right to privacy.

Meanwhile, Balkaur Singh had previously filed complaints with the Maharashtra DGP and Juhu police station, alleging that the BBC documentary used Sidhu Moosewala's name, image, and life story without the family's consent.

Balkaur further claimed that invitations had been sent out promising to reveal "unknown details" about the late singer, which he believed could tarnish his son's reputation. Moosewala’s father also claimed that the Maharashtra Police have not responded to the complaints he filed last week.

For the unversed, the BBC documentary was scheduled to be screened publicly in Mumbai on June 12, on Sidhu Moosewala’s birthday. However, the BBC World Service released the documentary on YouTube due to the ongoing controversy and legal issues.

The BBC’s two-part documentary revolves around Sidhu Moosewala’s early life, rise to fame, controversy and the events leading up to his murder on 29 May 2022 in Punjab’s Mansa district.
