Aditya Chopra’s Come Fall in Love - The DDLJ Musical opened at the historic Manchester Opera House yesterday, marking the historic cultural collaboration between Indian and the UK. The musical received a great response and was loved by the audience.
However, Lisa Nandy, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport in the UK, has recently reflected on the success and the collaboration between the two countries.
Lisa Nandy said, “It was a privilege to represent the UK government in India last month where I met with my ministerial counterparts to help strengthen the deep cultural ties between our two great countries. That deepening bond between our nations is evident in one of Bollywood's most beloved stories coming to the UK.”
She hoped for the success and added, “I hope that 'Come Fall in Love' - The DDLJ Musical is a great success in Manchester showcasing a talented British cast, including many local performers from the North West.”
However, the CEO of Yash Raj Films, Akshaye Widhani, shared that it was always a great honor for them to take India and its stories to the world. He expressed his excitement for the premiere of Come Fall in Love – The DDLJ Musical at the Manchester Opera House.
He described Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge as YRF's treasured IP and one of the biggest IPs in Indian cinema history, noting that the story had resonated with people worldwide for over 30 years.
He added, “We look forward to sharing this magical version of DDLJ with those who cherish the original film, as well as introducing the charm of DDLJ to new audiences for the first time! We hope we entertain everyone with Come Fall in Love – The DDLJ Musical as we bring all the big, bold flavours of a Bollywood film to the UK stage!”
Akshaye then expressed gratitude towards Lisa Nandy and sent her good wishes for the musical and her efforts in strengthening cultural ties with India. He also expressed gratitude to the city of Manchester, the Manchester Opera House, and the Mayor for their warm hospitality and for providing an opportunity to showcase India's culture to the city's people.
Meanwhile, the Mayor of Manchester, Andy Burnham, also talked about the musical and noted that they are proud to welcome the UK premiere of Come Fall in Love - The DDLJ Musical to Manchester. He also added that the iconic reimagining of the beloved Indian film was a landmark moment for cultural collaboration between the UK and India, and they were honored that Manchester was at the heart of it.
For the unversed, Come Fall in Love – The DDLJ Musical, is a new English musical comedy based on the Bollywood blockbuster film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ), which stars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in the pivotal roles.
The musical opened on June 4 at Manchester Opera House, will continue to play until June 21. The English musical features 18 brand-new English songs.
Come Fall in Love – The DDLJ Musical features an ensemble cast including Jena Pandya as Simran and Ashley Day as Rog, along with Irvine Iqbal as Baldev, Kara Lane as Minky, Harveen Mann-Neary, Ankur Sabharwal as Ajit, Kinshuk Sen as Kuljit, and Russell Wilcox as Rog Sr.
Meanwhile, DDLJ is the longest-running title in Indian cinema, playing continuously in Mumbai since its release in 1995.
