Academy Award winner Aaron Sorkin is officially back in Facebook territory. Sony Pictures confirmed Friday that his new film, The Social Reckoning, will release on October 9, 2026. The project is being billed as a “companion piece” to the 2010 hit The Social Network.
That earlier film, starring Jesse Eisenberg, became a cultural landmark, racking up $226 million worldwide and scoring eight Oscar nominations. Sorkin even won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
This time, Sorkin is both writing and directing, while also producing with Todd Black, Peter Rice, and Stuart Besser.
Jeremy Strong Leads Cast as Mark Zuckerberg
The ensemble for The Social Reckoning is stacked. Oscar nominee Jeremy Strong, best known for Succession and The Apprentice, will step into the shoes of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.
Joining him are Mikey Madison (Anora), playing whistleblower Frances Haugen; Jeremy Allen White (The Bear), portraying journalist Jeff Horwitz; and comedian-actor Bill Burr (Old Dads) in a key supporting role. Production is slated to kick off next month.
Story Focuses on Whistleblower Frances Haugen
Unlike The Social Network, which chronicled the chaotic birth of Facebook, The Social Reckoning shifts to nearly two decades later. The film dramatizes the true story of Frances Haugen, a young Facebook engineer who teamed up with Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz.
Their partnership produced the sensational 2021 "Facebook Files" series, which exposed how the social media site purposefully fostered false information while ignoring its detrimental effects on teenagers. Global discussion about the authority and accountability of social media behemoths was stoked by the fallout.
Why This Matters
Sorkin has described the new film as a reckoning—hence the title. With the original movie still quoted in classrooms and boardrooms, expectations for The Social Reckoning are already sky-high. Sony is betting big by sticking with the same October release window that turned The Social Network into an awards-season favorite.
Whether The Social Reckoning captures the zeitgeist the way its predecessor did remains to be seen, but with Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg and Aaron Sorkin back in control, Hollywood will be watching closely.
