The Election Commission on 16 March set the date of polling for Nagpur as 19 April, with results to be announced on 4 June 2024. Nagpur is one of the 48 Lok Sabha constituencies of Maharashtra.
Things are hotting up in the Nagpur Lok Sabha seat in Maharashtra where incumbent Nitin Gadkari, of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Minister for Road Transport & Highways, takes on Vikas Thakre from the Indian National Congress.
Nagpur has traditionally been a Congress bastion. Barring a few occasions of Independent or All India Forward Bloc victories, Nagpur has always favoured the Congress from the first elections in 1951 till 1996. The BJP first won Nagpur in 1996 with Banwarilal Purohit winning with 353547 votes.
Nitin Gadkari first won Nagpur in 2014 with 2,84,848 votes. He repeated the victory in 2019 when the constituency recorded 54.74% voter turnout, and is seeking luck the third time in 2024. Gadkari hopes to win Nagpur with record margins this time.
Vikas Thakre is the incumbent MLA from Nagpur West and president of the Nagpur District Congress Committee. Thakre has been mounting criticism on what he says is unchecked and indiscriminate construction in the city, leading to rising temperatures and other environmental problems. The BJP has refuted all charges and highlighted the welfare measures institutionalised by Gadkrai which have proven beneficial to thousands.
Another aspect to the Nagpur story is the effect of the migrant workers who have traditionally favoured the Shiv Sena and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena. But the BJP cadres are confident that in spite of the way this demographic votes, they will be able to win with a huge margin.
Added to this is the fact that out of the six assembly seats in the Nagpur district, four are held by the BJP buoying its chances of victory.
